The aluminum is chemically treated to open the pores of the metal, at which time an anodyne dye is printed on the metal. This dye actually penetrates the surface of the metal, and is then sealed into the aluminum in a chemical bath. This produces a very weather-resistant plate that will give many years of service in outdoor environments.
