Appetite Stimulants are medicines that are prescribed to boost appetite and improve nutrition in patients with severe weight loss related to certain chronic conditions. The most commonly prescribed appetite stimulant approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is progestin. Progesterone is a synthetic version of the natural female hormone progesterone. The synthetic progestin was originally developed to be used as a contraceptive. However, because of the side effects of weight gain, it was also used as an appetite stimulator. Mergrol acetate acts as an estrogen blocker, blocking the ovaries from releasing estrogen. It is also used as a palliative treatment for advanced stage endometrial cancer and breast cancer.
