Aripiprazole is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat mental/mood disorders. It helps restore the balance of certain neurotransmitters (dopamine and serotonin) in the brain. Aripiprazole is known for its partial agonist activity, which helps stabilize mood and behavior.

Aripiprazole acts as a partial agonist at dopamine D₂ and serotonin 5-HT₁A receptors, and as an antagonist at 5-HT₂A receptors. This unique activity helps reduce both positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia and mood disorders, with fewer extrapyramidal side effects.

• Headache

• Weight gain (less than other antipsychotics)

• Extrapyramidal symptoms (e.g., tremors, restlessness)

• Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS)

• Tardive dyskinesia

• Suicidal thoughts (especially in younger patients)

• Use with caution in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis (increased risk of death)

• Monitor for metabolic changes (glucose, cholesterol)

• May impair judgment—avoid alcohol and operating heavy machinery
