    Ascorbic acid or Vitamin C is a vitamin found in various foods and sold as a dietary supplement. It is used to prevent and treat scurvy. Vitamin C is an essential nutrient involved in the repair of tissue and the enzymatic production of certain neurotransmitters. It also functions as an antioxidant.

    CHARACTERS
    Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals, becoming discoloured on exposure to air and moisture.
    Solubility: Freely soluble in water, sparingly soluble in ethanol (96 per cent).
    Melting point: About 190C, with decomposition.
    Iron: Maximum 2 ppm.
    Sulfated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
