The Process : Trans-esterification of oil takes place when triglycerides react with methanol in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, resulting in the formation of methyl ester and glycerin. After this reaction occurs in the mixing section, the methyl esters are separated (as light phase) from glycerin water (as heavy phase) in the settling section. In the next step counter current washing of methylester removes it as a by-product to give bio-diesel. Rectification column removes excess methanol in the glycerin. Further purification takes place to convert industrial grade glycerin to pharma grade glycerin by distillation.
