Methotrexate, abbreviated mtx and formerly known as amethopterin, is an antimetabolite and antifolate drug used in treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases. It acts by inhibiting the metabolism of folic acid. Biotrexate began to replace the more powerful and toxic antifolate aminopterin starting in the 1950s, and the two should not be confused with each other.

Indications:

• malignant neoplasms, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis
• Burkitt’s lymphom choriocarcinoma.
• Mycosis fungoides.
• Rheumatoid arthritis breast cancer advanced lymphosarcoma crohn’s disease leukaemi
• Maintaining remission in children with acute leukaemias.
• Autoimmune diseases like rapidly progressing rheumatoid arthritis, severe psoriasis, pemphigus, myasthenia gravis, uveitis, chronic active hepatitis.

Side effects: The following is a list of possible side effects that may occur from all constituting ingredients of biotrexate tablet. This is not a comprehensive list. • Damaged skin becomes inflamed on re-exposure to radiation, sunlight in psoriasis patients

• Erosions of inflamed areas
• Metabolic changes
• Blood in the urine
• Tiredness
• Inflamed blood vessels
• Pain or difficulty breathing
• General feeling of illness, boils and fever
• Headache
• Urge to vomit

• Loss of ability to speak or understand speech
• Flaking skin
• Weakening or softening of bones
• Red spots on the skin
• Low levels of white and red blood cells
• Cells that clot blood
