The expanded metal sheet is made by first making numerous slits in the sheet, and then stretching the sheet. The stretching makes a sole lozenge pattern that is opening with one of the strands bulging at a minor angle.

These upraised strands can be trodden later in the process if wanted. As you can see this process creates no waste and it can add mechanical strength to the product.
