The mobile phase in the liquid reservoir is pumped into the system with a high-pressure pump. The sample solution is injected into the mobile phase with the injector, and is carried to the column (stationary phase) by the mobile phase. As different components of the sample solution have different partition coefficient in two phases, when the sample is moving relatively in the two phases, through repeated times of adsorption-desorption partition, each component has much difference on moving rates. So they are separated into individual component and effluents from the column in series. When the components pass the detector, the respective concentrations are translated into electronic signal to the recorder. Finally, the data are printed as spectrum.
