Cabergoline is a prescription medication used to treat conditions caused by high levels of the hormone prolactin in the body.It belongs to a class of drugs called dopamine receptor agonists.

How It Works

Cabergoline works by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, which in turn decreases the amount of prolactin released by the pituitary gland.This reduction in prolactin can help alleviate symptoms associated with hyperprolactinemia (excessive prolactin), such as irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and unwanted breast milk production in women who are not breastfeeding.It can also be used to shrink pituitary tumors that produce prolactin (prolactinomas).

Uses

Cabergoline is primarily prescribed for:

• Hyperprolactinemia: A condition where the body produces too much prolactin.

• Inhibition/Suppression of Lactation: In certain cases, it may be used to stop breast milk production.

Dosage and Administration

Cabergoline is typically taken as a tablet, with or without food, one or two times a week.The dosage and frequency are determined by a doctor and depend on the patient's prolactin levels and how they respond to the medication.The doctor will usually start with a low dose and gradually increase it, if necessary, at intervals of no less than four weeks.

• Unusual changes in behavior or mood, such as an increase in sexual urges, problems, or other compulsive behaviors.

   

   

• Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there).

   

   

• Fainting or severe dizziness, especially when standing up.
