Due to its astringency it is useful in digestive infections and as a nerve tonic. A strong brew may be used to soothe irritated eyelids, insect stings, swellings and sunburn. The caffeine may help to relieve headaches. Green tea is a healthier drink and its strong antioxidant activity due to polyphenols gives the leaf potential as a cancer preventative. The oil extracted from the seeds is used for flavour and aroma.
