Cashew is derived from the Portuguese name for the fruit of the cashew tree “caju” which means nut that produces itself. The binomial name of cashew is “anacardium accidentale”. It is a tropical evergreen tree that produces the cashew nut and cashew apple. The tree can grow as high as 14m, but the dwarf species can grow as tall as 6m, the dwarf species are considered more profitable because of its earlier maturity and high yield.
Uses/Benefits :

• The cashew is widely consumed; the nut is eaten after the outer-shell has been removed. The outer-shell itself yields derivatives that can be used to produce lubricants, paints and some water proofing materials.
• The cashew juice/apple is usually red or yellow depending on the specie. It is also consumed and can be processed into a sweet astringent fruit drink or distilled into alcohol. The apple can be cooked curries or fermented into vinegar. In some instances, it is used to flavour drinks, both alcoholic and non alcoholic. The cashew leaves and tree bark can be made into tea and applied in the treatment of diarrhoea.
• Cashew nuts which are not good for human consumption can be used to feed livestock; the leaves are consumed by animals.
