It belongs to the Chinese (Sinitic) branch of the Sino-Tibetan languages. It is the Yue Chinese dialect group’s traditional prestige variant, with approximately 80 million native speakers. While Cantonese refers to the prestige variety, it is frequently used to refer to the entire Yue subgroup of Chinese, which includes similar but mainly mutually incomprehensible languages and dialects like Taishanese.
