Citronella is an aromatic, perennial grass that is cultivated primarily in Asia. Citronella Essential Oil is most widely known for its ability to deter mosquitos and other insects. Because the aroma is so widely associated with insect repellent products, Citronella Essential Oil is abundant in citronellal (aldehyde) and in geraniol and citronellol (monoterpenols). The specific composition can vary due to several factors including the region that it’s grown. Aromatically, Citronella Oil possesses a citrusy, slightly fruity, fresh and sweet aroma that blends well with essential oils in the citrus, floral, herbaceous and wood families.
Blends with : Citronella blends well with most oils, but specifically well with Bergamot, Bitter Orange, Cedarwood, Geranium, Lemon, Orange, Lavender and Pine.
Constituents : Volatile Oil, Tannin and mucilage, citronellot, geraniol, and citronella.
Uses : Citronella is credited with having therapeutic properties as an antiseptic, deodorant, insecticide, parasitic, tonic and as a stimulant. Many commercial repellents contain Citronella, and it is often used in combination with Cedarwood to produce a pleasant smelling natural insect repellent. It is also used in soaps and candles, and has common applications in massage.
