Drug Class: Polypeptide antibiotic (Polymyxin group)
Mechanism of Action: It kills bacteria by binding to and disrupting their cell membranes, which causes the cell contents to leak out and leads to bacterial death.
Uses: It is effective against certain multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including Aerobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It is commonly used in critically ill patients admitted to hospitals. It may also be used as an inhalation to treat chronic chest infections in patients with cystic fibrosis.
