Slate stone is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock. The surface of slate has a well developed mark of cleavage. This makes the Slate to split into thin layers along the plane of cleavages formed due to flattened and elongated minerals.
