CRAB is based on remote optical sensing of the water surface by a vertical divergent light beam. The difference between reflectances of oil products and water allows detection of the oil slicks. The instrument consists of a sensor based on IR LEDs and single-channel optoelectronic receiving system. The measurement data are processed by a built-in microcontroller.
