Technology Used
When life evolved on earth, membranes were essential as they allowed the formation of cells, and after that compartmentalization of processes in cells. When human learned to produce much complicated and efficient synthetic membranes, they also developed the ability of compartmentalizing processes. Membranes can also be used for filtering cells from as an example waste water. A membrane bioreactor has been created, if filtered cells further helps in breaking down additional waste flowing through the membranes. A membrane bioreactor comprises some biological items in association with the membrane, which is a surface that has the ability of letting some things through it and can block others.
Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) combine the usage of membrane technology and biological processes for treating waste water. A high standard of treatment is achieved, within one process unit by replacing the conventional arrangement of settling tank, aeration tank and filtration that normally produces what is termed as a tertiary standard affluent.
The dependence on disinfection can also be minimized, since the membranes with pore openings (generally in the 0.1-0.5mm range), trap a significant proportion of pathogenic organisms. One of the most common MBR configuration is having the membrane immersed in the waste water. Although a side stream configuration is also possible in which the waste water can be pumped through the membrane module and then return to the bioreactor. Operating at a mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentration of up to 20,000mg/L and a sludge age of 30-60 days, MBRs provide additional advantages over the conventionally activated sludge plants that includes a smaller footprint.
