Basil Seeds The basil plant is native to India and other tropical countries of Asia. The basil plant is also called as sweet basil and is different from the Holy basil plant which is the plant Ocimum tenuiflorum also called Tulsi in India. Basil plant, as we all know are very beneficial but whats more surprising is that its seeds are equally beneficial too. Sweet basil grows best in a hot and dry climate and is very cold sensitive. Though it prefers full sunlight it can be grown indoors in pots. The leaves may wilt in full sunlight but they soon recover on watering. These black and tear shaped seeds(not to be confused with chia seeds whose colour varies from black to grey and white) are also called as sabja seeds, tukamaria seeds, falooda seeds or sweet basil seeds. Seeds of the sweet basil plant are called sabja, tukmaria, tukhmaria, falooda, selasih etc in India. Sabja or tukmaria seeds are used in Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine in India as well as in Chinese medicine. They are basically the seeds of the sweet basil. sabja seeds are most commonly used in making falooda and can be easily added to sherbets, milkshakes and other drinks. if you ever had falooda then you have tasted the basil seeds. although these sweet basil seeds do not have taste of their own but they give a good texture to the dish and make it healthy too.
