Points of Interest
Cranberries are actually one of the most unique fruits in the world. In fact, it's only one of three fruits that are native to North America. They are a wild fruit that grows on long-running vines in sandy bogs and marshes. It was Native Americans who first took advantage of cranberries. They mixed deer meat and mashed cranberries to make pemmican-survival food. They also believed in the medicinal value of cranberries-long before science discovered cranberry's health benefits! Medicine men would use cranberries in poultices to draw poison from arrow wounds. They also used the rich red juice of the cranberry as a natural dye for rugs, blankets and clothing. Legend has it that the Pilgrims served cranberries at the first Thanksgiving. The tradition still continues today.
One half cup of dried cranberries provides about the same amount of fiber as one cup of fresh cranberries. But antioxidants are the superstars in cranberries which, like their botanical cousins blueberries, are among the richest sources of proanthocyanidins (PAC's). These antioxidants are credited with preventing E. coli bacteria to adhere to the bladder wall and multiplying to cause a bladder infection.
Emerging research also suggests that cranberries’ bacteria – blocking role may help protect other parts of the body as well. PAC’s in cranberries may thwart peptic ulcers by preventing H. Pylori, the bacteria responsible for causing most stomach ulcers from adhere to the stomach lining.
Eating sweetened, dried cranberries appears to offer anti-adhering properties similar to cranberry juice in three of five women with urinary tract infections, say researchers from Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston.
