PHPA is a copolymer of acrylamide that has undergone partial hydrolysis, introducing anionic (negatively charged) carboxyl groups into the polymer chain. This anionic nature and high molecular weight are what give it the ability to:

Encapsulate: The long polymer chains wrap around the clay particles and cuttings.

Viscosify: The polymer chains create a non-Newtonian, shear-thinning solution (thixotropic) in water, meaning the fluid is highly viscous at rest (good for suspending cuttings) but thins out under shear (good for pumping).
