Duplex Stainless steel metal was firstly developed about 70 years ago in Sweden for use in the sulfite paper industry application.
These Duplex alloys were originally developed or invented to combat corrosion problems caused by chloride-bearing cooling waters and other aggressive chemical process fluids.
The nitrogen alloyed duplex stainless steel are particularly suitable for applications covering the -50oF / +600oF temperature range. Temperatures outside this range may be considered but need some restrictions, particularly for welded structures.
“Duplex” metal is mixed microstructure with about equal proportions of “ferrite” and “austenite”. Duplex stainless steels are a family of many grades under one umbrella, which range in corrosion performance depending on their alloy content. The chemical composition based on high contents of Chromium and Molybedium, improves pitting corrosion resistance and intergranular, respectively.
With significant addition of nitrogen gas as an alloying agent, improved toughness in the heat-affected zones of welds and excellent chloride corrosion resistance both was achieved thus quickly becoming the best metal of stainless steels, accounting for more than 75% of duplex steel metal consumption.
It has got popular rapidly because of its cost-based combination as the replacement of the nickel content with the addition of nitrogen which is comparatively very less expensive.
