While an international image of the modern style sari may have been popularized by airline stewardesses, each region in the Indian subcontinent has developed, over the centuries, its own unique sari style. Embroidered shari, religious objects, and household items often were seen as a mark of wealth and status. Embroidery was also produced for everyday use all over the world. In English culture, centuries old examples survive showing that embroidery was a skill marking a girl's path into womanhood as well conveying rank and social standing.Many of these items used materials that were accessible to non-professionals.
