EPDM rubber (ethylene propylene diene monomer (M- class) rubber) is a synthetic rubber or an elastomer which is used in a wide range of applications. The letter E in the name of the rubber stands for ethylene, P for propylene, D for diene and M for its classification in ASTM standard D-1418, which means the rubber has a saturated chain of polymethylene. Dienes currently being used in the manufacturing of EPDM rubbers include dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), ethylidenenorbornene (ENB), and vinyl norbornene (VNB).

EPDM foil rolls are widely used in the waterproofing of roofs.
The ethylene content of the rubber could vary from 45% to 75%. Higher the ethylene content, higher will be the loading possibilities of the polymer and it will also have better extrusion and mixing properties. When cured with peroxide, the polymer displays higher crosslink density compared with its amorphous counterparts. The amorphous polymer could be easily processed and is greatly influenced by its molecular structure. The dienes, which usually constitute the 2.5 % to 12 % of the weight of the composition serve as crosslinks when the polymer is cured with sulphur and resin. Peroxide cures the diene (or third monomer) and functions as a co-agent, which provides it resistance to unwanted thickness, creep and flow during the end use. It is recommended for the sheets having higher temperature applications ranging from – 400 F to + 4000 F. It also has resistance to a wide range of chemical intermediates used in fertilizer plants, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, and steel mills etc.
