The Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test is a screening test for syphilis. It detects antibodies in the blood that are produced by the body in response to the bacterium Treponema pallidum, which causes syphilis. The RPR test is typically performed using a slide coated with a substance containing cardiolipin, cholesterol, and lecithin, along with a carbon particle suspension. When the test serum is mixed with the reagent on the slide, if antibodies against Treponema pallidum are present, they will react with the cardiolipin-cholesterol-lecithin antigen, causing visible clumping or agglutination.
