Animal feed has a direct influence on the quality and safety of food of animal origin. Consumers of meat, milk, fish, and eggs expect the industry and retailers to supply safe, high quality products. The feed regulation applies to producers and traders of compound feeds, animal feeds, pre-mixtures and additives, as well as transportation, transshipment, cultivation and feeding at the livestock farm. In addition, laboratories which carry out analyses may be certified.
What are the standards?

• The European Regulation on Feed Hygiene (EU Reg. 183/2005) sets up hygiene and safety requirements for the whole feed chain, including feed additives and pre-mixtures. This regulation:
• Integrates the manufacturing and distribution of feed additives, pre-mixtures, and complete feeds in a global food chain
• Integrates HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points) principles
• Promotes the establishment of codes of practice in the feed chain.

The FAMI-QS code standard addresses feed safety, legality & quality based on the European animal feed Regulation. It covers both quality & feed safety management systems, traceability, product regulatory compliance… and many other areas.

The European Union has developed many food regulations in order to protect the consumer’s health. In the last few years, EU regulation has become even more complex, as many food safety crises have occurred due to animal feed.
To ensure compliance with these laws and to improve feed safety and quality, the European Feed Additives Manufacturers Association has issued a code against which to be certified: FAMI-QS (Feed Additive and pre-Mixture System). Whether you are a trader or a manufacturer of feed additives or pre-mixtures you need to ensure the quality, safety and legality of your products
