Febuxostat helps to lower hyperuricemia (high concetration of uric acid in blood) with gout who can not be treated with allopurinol. It is used for long-term treatment for gout. It is generally recommended only when Allopurinol is not effective in gout treatment.

It is to be taken orally. It is called a xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor for reducing levels of blood uric acid for the person suffeing from gout. Uric acid originates from purines and purines produced in the body by consuming from certain food and drinks. Febuxostat helps to treat gout with special kind of arthritis in which uric acid deposits in the body joints resulting in severe episodes of inflammation, swelling, pain & heat in some joints. Also, the medicine works by reducing the amount of uric acid that is made in the body. Febuxostat works by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme that is responsible for the synthesis of uric acid, thereby reducing serum uric acid levels.
