Felts, sometimes called non-wovens, are manufactured in a variety of ways and used in many different applications, including applicators, polishers, wipers, wicks, seals, cushions and gaskets. Wool (natural) felt comes in many thicknesses and densities and has excellent cushioning, sealing, wicking and environmental properties. Synthetic felts are generally made from polyester, nylon, rayon, polypropylene, Nomex® and Teflon®.
Traditional Felts are made by manipulating wool fibers with the combined action of pressure, heat, moisture and vibration.
Traditional Needled Felts are manufactured to the same general specifications as their counterparts in the traditional pressed felt line. This approach often allows a lower-cost alternative to an application that allows a substitution. These products are usually a blend of natural and synthetic fibers.Engineered Needled Felts are made with a needling process that must be used when making felt from man-made fibers, as these do not lend themselves well to being made with the “pressing” process. A variety of different materials can be needled together to meet sophisticated demands. Also, a number of porosities and finishes can be achieved through different processes, including calendaring and singeing.
Fabrics, sometimes called wovens, can come in numerous different styles, thicknesses and widths, and can be used in numerous applications, including coverings, decorations, separators and sound absorbers. Fabric differences can range from the cotton fabric used to make clothing to carpet used for sound absorption or surface protection.
