In a floating type ball valve, the ball is suspended in the flowing fluid and is retained in location by the compression of two elastomeric seats counter to it. The shaft is linked at the top of the ball and permits the switch from an open to a closed position with a quarter turn movement i.e. 90 degrees. When the shaft is moved, a load which is applied to the ball gets hard-pressed against its seats.

This design of floating type ball valve is lightweight and economic, which matches bore sizes upto 10 inches: above this bore size, the seats of the valve will not be able to endure weightier and heavier balls and the valve would not work or operate securely and efficiently.

Floating type ball valve provides a bi-directional shut-off of the liquid flow (as the trunnion ball valve type).
