Ground coat enamel frits are bluish black to jet black in colour, but people prefer to eat out of white or coloured utensils, so a white cover coat enamel is usually applied to the ground coat enamel, to make the finish more attractive. In the case of sign boards, a white background with red or green lettering makes the signs easier to read, though some people prefer a blue background with white lettering.
