During the manufacturing of draft gear and before it’s insertion into the railway car, the piston is positioned in the cylinder in a preshortened position. These inserts are inserted in the cylinder about the piston rod to hold the piston in the preshortened position in order to easily insert draft gear into the railway car. Furthermore, these inserts break down when railway car is put into service and hence piston returns to its normal position.
