Granular Carbon : VS Activated Carbon is a microporous form of carbon based on coconut shell, it is a harder variety, therefore not prone to abrasion. Activation is achieved with steam and it develops myriads of pores with enormous internal surface area. The carbon atoms exert attraction of Van Der Waals forces to the molecules of surrounding particles. It is generally  recommended for use in beds or columns where higher pressure is likely, or where there is backwashing so that the carbon may not crumble or flow out as may be respectively applicable. Also it will allow sufficient flow of with an acceptable pressure drop. The higher bulk density of approximately 0.5 gm/cc makes it more in terms of weight in any given volume of loading.
