The raw materials may be cotton, silk, or wool, which are spun into threads on a spinning wheel called a charkha. Spinning of khadi for rural self-employment was founded and promoted by Mahatma Gandhi. Today, khadi fabrics are used for bags, apparels, aprons and caps.
