Metal Gathering is a means of pre-forming a bar to create an enlarged diameter from a smaller diameter. The cold bar is placed in the metal gathering jaws. A low voltage high current passes through the bar and thereby heating the head to forging temperature. An axial force is then applied, compressing the bar at its hot end forming an on in shaped head.

Save on BTU’s:
Why heat up the entire furnace, its bricks, surrounding atmosphere (coupled with fumes and dirt), when all you want to heat is your job? In this case, the machine is at your service immediately, without the need for energy consuming warm-up time. What's more, only the bar volume to be gathered is actually heated.
Save on material:
Imagine machining a 24 mm dia rod to obtain 8 mm profile on one end. We have to try to achieve the ratio of output to equal to one. We mustn't lose out a lot in machining. So we go reverse i.e. Take an 8 mm job and gather it to 24 mm.
NO FORGING FURNACE REQUIRED
The work - piece need not be reheated as when it is taken out of the equipments, the heat is at forging heat and thus can be transferred instantaneously to the die forging press.

The inherent property of resistance heating, which causes heat to travel from the core towards outside and relatively fast heating keeps the upset head without scale. Thus, reducing abrasive wear of forging dies.

In order to bring further control on the shape of the gathered (upset) material, PLC controlled metal gathered machine has been developed. The PLC controlled metal gathering machine is tailor made as per the customer requirement.
The machine consists of standard metal gathering machine and additional components such as servo valve-for flow & pressure, linear encoder, PLC controller for controlling various parameters such as flow of forward movement, flow of retract movement, heat control at different stages of metal gathering.
Heat control is achieved through precisely designed thyristor controller which enables to control the heat output of the machine. Thus PLC controlled metal gathering machine is a new tool in the hands of automotive component manufacturers to improve the productivity and reduce the component cost.
