The annual mask-dance festival takes place in the month of June/July at the Hemis monastery about 40kms away from Leh. Hemis is the biggest and the most important monastery in Ladakh, built in the 17th century by Chapgon Gyalshas and ever since has enjoyed the patronage of the royal family. The Monastery holds a 2 day celebration to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava who is known to be a reincarnation of Buddha. This masked parade is one of the most sacred rituals here and complete Buddhist cultural extravaganza. Drums, cymbals and long horns fill the valley’s of Leh with the sound of victory of good over evil by performing these masked dances.
