Horizontal Directional Drilling

Horizontal Directional Drilling is a method to install pipelines below a surface without disturbing the obstacle (road / railway / river etc.) causing no settlements to the ground. The HDD work is carried out from the dry surface well away from the embankment of the obstacle.

The pipeline to be installed is welded in a straight line on one side of the obstacle. The HDD equipment is positioned on the opposite side of the obstacle. Using a proprietary drilling method, drill pipe is advanced along a pre-determined arc. The drill pipe is steered along this course below ground until it reaches the predetermined exit surface location near the product pipe string. The borehole is enlarged and conditioned. The product pipe is then pulled through the borehole.

With HDD one can easily maintain line and grade as per the requirements.

HDD technique is mostly used to install the steel and  M.S. pipelines below rail, road crossings, highways and other areas where cut and cover method is impractical.

It is the most appropriate method of installing ducts through which high-tension power cables, fibre optic cables and telecommunication cables can be pulled.
