The IK Code, or impact rating, is an international numeric classification for the degrees of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment against external mechanical impacts.
It provides a means of specifying the capacity of an enclosure to protect its contents from external impacts. The IK Code is defined in the European Standard EN 62262.
EN 62262 also specifies the way enclosures should be mounted when tests are carried out, the atmospheric conditions that should prevail, the number of impacts (5) and their (even) distribution, and the size, style, material, dimensions etc. of the various types of hammer designed to produce the energy levels required.
What is an IK Rating?
An IK (Impact Protection) rating is a unit used to define the levels of protection an electrical enclosure offers to any contents and assemblies housed inside. This is calculated by measuring the enclosure's protection against external mechanical impacts.
To ensure your components are sufficiently protected, it’s important to understand the protection level offered from each rating and what IK rating you require for your application. An IK rating varies from 0 – 10, with IK10 offering the highest level of protection.
TABLE OF CORRESPONDANCE

Equivalent to impact of 0.25kg mass dropped from 80mm above impacted surface.
IK03 Protected against 0.35 joules impact
Equivalent to impact of 0.25kg mass dropped from 140mm above impacted surface.
IK04 Protected against 0.5 joules impact
Equivalent to impact of 0.25kg mass dropped from 200mm above impacted surface.
IK05 Protected against 0.7 joules impact
Equivalent to impact of 0.25kg mass dropped from 280mm above impacted surface.
IK06 Protected against 1 joule impact
Equivalent to impact of 0.25kg mass dropped from 400mm above impacted surface.
IK07 Protected against 2 joules impact
Equivalent to impact of 0.5kg mass dropped from 400mm above impacted surface.
IK08 Protected against 5 joules impact
Equivalent to impact of 1.7kg mass dropped from 300mm above impacted surface.

Equivalent to impact of 5kg mass dropped from 200mm above impacted surface.
IK10 Protected against 20 joules impact
Equivalent to impact of 5kg mass dropped from 400mm above impacted surface.
EN62262 (IK10) standard specifies the way enclosures should be mounted when tests are carried out, the atmospheric conditions that should prevail, the number of impacts and their even distribution, with the size, style, material, dimensions etc.
