Sodium chloride, also known as common salt is an ionic chemical compound with the formula NaCl. Industrial salt forms an intermediary in the manufacturing of a wide variety of products right from detergents, textile dyes, resins, plastics, glass and other chemicals. Industrial salt also assists in cleaning gas and oil wells and is an essential component in the manufacture of paper, tyre, brass, bleach and case-hardened steel.

Solar ponds and other energy producing facilities require large amounts of salt to maintain a necessary salinity, adding to the application of industrial salt as an energy producer.
