Contact SupplierIR 64 is a long-grain, non-Basmati rice variety, primarily grown in India’s southern and southeastern regions, including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Chhattisgarh, as well as parts of Myanmar, Pakistan, and Nepal. Developed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and released in 1985 in the Philippines, it is known for its high yield, early maturity, and resistance to blast, bacterial blight, and brown planthopper. Its average grain length ranges from 5.8mm to 6.2mm, with forms available in raw (white), parboiled, and steam, and broken percentages of 5%, 10%, 15%, 25%, or 100%.IR 64 is prized for its excellent cooking qualities, including intermediate amylose content (around 23%) for a soft, fluffy texture, and a mild, pleasant aroma. It is rich in carbohydrates, minerals, and B vitamins (especially in parboiled form), with a protein content of about 9% and low glycemic impact, making it suitable for biryani, pulao, and daily meals. The parboiled version, often creamy white or golden, has a longer shelf life due to inactivated enzymes, 127% more phenolic compounds for kidney and gut health, and high nutritional value. It is widely exported to Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, with packaging in 25kg or 50kg PP, BOPP, jute, or non-woven bags. Its affordability, versatility, and high purity (95-100%) make it a staple for hotels, restaurants, and households globally.
