The laparoscopic Veress needle is a specialized instrument used in laparoscopic surgery to create the initial access point (pneumoperitoneum) into the abdominal cavity. It is typically used before inserting the trocars (hollow tubes) through which the laparoscopic instruments and camera are introduced.

Here's how the laparoscopic Veress needle is used:

    1. Patient Preparation: The patient is positioned appropriately for the laparoscopic procedure, usually under general anesthesia.
    2. Needle Placement: The surgeon identifies the intended entry point for the Veress needle, typically around the umbilical region. The area is cleaned and prepped with antiseptic solution.
    3. Needle Insertion: The surgeon holds the Veress needle like a pen and inserts it into the abdominal cavity through a small skin incision. The needle is advanced through the subcutaneous tissue, fascia, and peritoneum.

    4.        Insufflation: With the needle confirmed in the correct position, carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is attached to the Veress needle, and insufflation is initiated. The gas fills the abdominal cavity, creating a pneumoperitoneum, which lifts the abdominal wall away from the underlying organs, creating a working space for the laparoscopic instruments.

    1. Trocar Placement: After achieving an adequate pneumoperitoneum, the Veress needle is withdrawn, and a trocar (hollow tube) is inserted through the same incision. The trocar acts as a portal for introducing laparoscopic instruments and the camera into the abdominal cavity.

It's important to note that the laparoscopic Veress needle technique requires proper training and experience to ensure safe and accurate placement. Complications, although rare, can include injury to blood vessels or organs during needle insertion. Surgeons may choose alternative methods for accessing the abdominal cavity, such as the open Hasson technique or optical trocars, depending on the patient's condition and the surgeon's preference.
