Together with grass hay and oat chaff, Lucerne hay serves as a crucial source of necessary fibers and nutrients for horses. Lucerne hay is also known as alfalfa in some parts of the world- for example in North America. The term alfalfa is a Spanish adjustment of the Arabic word al-faṣfaṣa. Lucerne (Medicago sativa) is a perennial legume which is used mainly for the production of hay, silage and pasture. It is grown throughout the world as forage for livestock and is often harvested for hay, but can also be grazed or made into silage.
