Mechanical Splicing (Couplers)

Building Code Requirements for Masonry Construction require longer lap lengths in some places. This can be done by overlapping two steel bars and then tying the lapped portion together, but this means more congestion in masonry cells and more difficult construction. The most effective way to alleviate this problem is to use mechanical rebar couplers which join two steel bars by the use of Couplers, thereby eliminating the lap. Reinforcing bar coupling has all the features desirable in a rebar joining system, combined with unequalled simplicity of installation. Couplers are designed to splice two bars (either the same diameter or even different diameters) normally where one bar is free to move and can be rotated or sometimes in situations when neither bar is free to move or to be rotated. In this way, the Spliced Bars behave as continuous lengths of reinforcing steel bars providing continuity and structural integrity, retain requisite strength, are easy to install while developing higher tensile strength than lap splicing, in reinforced concrete.
