It is a advance version of Tangsten Invertor Gas Welding (TIG). Even on low current the ARC is stable and is concentrated on the work piece using a constricting Nozzle.
The basic difference is in the formation of the ARC.
In TIG Welding, the ARC is intiated between Tungsten Electrode and Job, in the presence of inert gas. Ref. Fig. (A).
In PAW, the ARC is intiated Electrode and Nozzle in the presence of plasma gas and it is know as pilot ARC. Ref., Fig (B).
The Main Plasma ARC is tranfferd to the Job thiough the orifies of the nozzles which constrict the Arc. The Plasma Arc comes out of the nozzles with high velocity ( The Speed of sound), achieving the temperature iof 20,000 C.
