Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi or Jiloe), a perennial and climbing shrub with succulent stem and papery barks, has been widely distributed in various countries. The shrub contains various classes of compounds such as alkaloids, glycosides, aliphatic compounds, polyphenols, lactones, steroids, and terpenoids. In traditional medicine, Tinospora cordifolia is commonly used to improve memory and acts as learning enhancer. Preclinical and experimental studies declared that Tinospora cordifolia extracts ameliorates cognitive functions in rat models of sleep deprivation and drug-induced amnesia as well as it has memory enhancement properties in normal and in memory deficient animals. Tinospora cordifolia also has protective effects against Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.
