Ofloxacin is a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibacterial agent that inhibits the supercoiling activity of bacterial dna gyrase, halting dna replication. Ofloxacin is a racemic mixture, which consists of 50% levofloxacin (the biologically active component) and 50% of its “mirror image” or enantiomer dextrofloxacin. Ofloxacin has been associated with adverse drug reactions, such as tendon damage (including spontaneous tendon ruptures) andperipheral neuropathy (which may be irreversible); tendon damage may manifest long after therapy had been completed, and, in severe cases, may result in lifelong disabilities.

ofloxacin is off-white to pale yellow crystalline powder. It is sparingly to slightly soluble in aqueous solutions with ph 7 (solubility falls to 4 mgml) and freely soluble in aqueous solutions with ph above 9 with melting range of 250°c to 257°c.
