Omeprazole is a 4-methoxy-3, 5-dimethylpyridyl, 5-methoxybenzimidazole derivative of timoprazole that is used in the therapy of stomach ulcers and zollinger-ellison syndrome. The drug inhibits an h (+)-k (+)-exchanging atpase which is found in gastric parietal cells.
A highly effective inhibitor of gastric acid secretion used in the therapy of stomach ulcers and zollinger-ellison syndrome. Omeprazole belongs to a class of antisecretory compounds, the substituted benzimidazoles that suppress gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the h+ k+ atpase enzyme system at the secretory surface of the gastric parietal cell.

omeprazole is white to white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water (0.5 mgml), dmso (25 mgml), and ethanol (4.5 mgml) with melting range of 156.2°c to 157.2°c.
