CT contrast media, also known as contrast agents, are substances that improve the visibility of tissues and organs in CT scans. They can be injected into a vein or artery, swallowed, or administered rectally. 

Types of CT contrast media

Iodine-based

A colorless, transparent liquid that's the main component of CT contrast media. Iodine has a high atomic number, so it absorbs more X-ray photons than most of the body. 

Barium sulfate

An insoluble white powder that's often used to enhance contrast in the GI tract. It's usually swallowed as a suspension or administered as an enema. 

How CT contrast media is used

CT contrast media helps doctors distinguish between normal and abnormal conditions. 

It's used to visualize vessels and changes in tissues. 

It's used in tests of the urinary tract, uterus, and fallopian tubes.
