Pantoprazole is used to treat erosive esophagitis associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition in which backward flow of acid from the stomach causes heartburn and injury of the food pipe (esophagus). It is also used to treat conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How it works (Mechanism)?
Pantoprazole is in a class of proton-pump inhibitors(PPI). It works by blocking acid production in the stomach and thus heals the stomach and esophagus.
What is Ulcers and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) ?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) : A chronic condition in which the lower esophageal sphincter allows gastric acids to reflux into the esophagus, causing heartburn, acid indigestion, and possible injury to the esophageal lining.
How to take this medicine (Administration & Dosage) ?
The usual dose is 40 mg once daily for 4 – 8 weeks 30 minutes before meal.
Side effects of medicine
This medication is generally well tolerated. Common side effects include headache, diarrhoea, nausea or dizziness.
Interaction with other medicines
If you are using any other medication while taking this medicine such as Ketoconazole or digoxin.
Contraindications (Who should avoid this)
1. If you are hypersensitive to pantoprazole or any other medications.
2. If you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant.
3. If you are breast feeding.
Storage conditions
1. Keep away from light and moisture.
2. Store at room temperature between 15° - 30° C (59° - 86° F).
