Paper Mache Products

Paper machie products are made of pounded disintegrated paper. The procedure involves soaking paper in water for sometime, mixed with an adhesive mixture and pounded together. This mixture is then shaped over different moulds and allowed to set. These are varnished and painted when absolutely dry. Paper that has been pounded to pulp has an extremely smooth finish while less pounded paper is less smooth. These products vary in design and color combinations and gold is mostly used to highlight certain motifs. Lastly, varnish is applied to the finished product for smoothness and to impart high gloss. The favorite patterns found in papier machie are sparkling running streams, shikaras, lotuses blooming in Dal lake, green fields contrasting with white snow capped mountains, tiny songbirds perch & nest and other colorful floral designs.
