Peanut Seed

A groundnut or peanut plant is a small, usually erect, thin stemmed plant with feather like leaves. The pods can reach up to 10 cm in length and can contain between 1 to 5 seeds. Groundnut is famous by its Indian name Mongphali. Groundnuts belong to the pea and bean family and are a legume but are considered as nut because of their high nutrition value. The seeds are particularly valued for their protein contents, which is of high biological value. It contains more protein than meat, more than two and a half eggs or any other vegetable food. Protein contents in groundnuts are well balanced.

Groundnut seeds can be eaten raw or after roasting or processing into peanut butter. It is an important crop valued for oil. It is also a nutritious food item widely used in confectioneries around the world.
