Origin:Â Myroxylon pereirae is said to be indigenous to Lima in Peru.Â
Form:Â The Peru Balsam oil is a thick-viscosity liquid.Â
Scent:Â A sweet, fresh, earthy and typically balsamic smell exudes from the Peru Balsam oil.Â
Shade and Appearance:Â The Peru Balsam oil, when extracted, is dark Brown to look at.Â
Chemical constituents:Â The Peru Balsam oil mainly consists of - Cinnamein, Cinnamyl Cinnamate, Benzyl Benzoate, Benzoic acid, Vanillin, Cinnamic acid, alcohol & aldehyde, farnesol and Nerolidol.Â
Extraction method: Balsam of Peru is an aromatic viscous resin obtained by scorching ‘V-shaped wounds’ on the bark of the trunk of the Myroxylon pereirae trees. As a healing response, the oily, resin-like, aromatic fluid exudes, to heal the tree's wounds; this liquid is collected and an essential oil called Balsam of Peru is steam-distilled from the balsam.Â
Blends well with:Â The Peru Balsam oil makes a good blend with Ylang-Ylang, Petit grain, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Spices and Rose oils besides floral and oriental bases.Â
The ‘Oil(some) properties’: The Peru Balsam EO is widely regarded for its anti-fungal, bactericidal, stimulant, anti-parasitic, fixative and expectorant properties.Â
Major benefits and uses!Â
Therapeutic:Â Therapeutically, the Peru Balsam oil helps in severe conditions of asthma, nervous tension, bronchitis, stress, eczema and rashes.
Medicinal:Â The Peru Balsam is an important ingredient of hemorrhoid suppositories and ointment (e.g., Anusol), cough medicine/suppressant and lozenges, diaper rash ointments, tincture of benzoin, wound sprays; it has also been studied to be used for inhibiting TB and common ulcer-causing bacteria. Balsam Peru increases blood flow to a wounded area and hence helps faster healing.Â
Beauty and Perfumery:Â The Balsam of Peru is used as a fixative in perfumes and toiletries products. In the form of ointments and lotions it finds usage in manufacturing of oral and lip ointments, calamine lotions, surgical dressings, dental cements and some periodontal impression materials and in the treatment of dry socket in dentistry. It is also a useful ingredient in toothpaste, mouthwash, scented , cleaning products, pesticides, insect repellants, air fresheners and deodorizers, scented candles and oil paints.
